Santa Cruz fishing essentials: Your go-to guide for Los Plateados

Planning a fishing trip to Los Plateados in Santa Cruz, Argentina? You're in for an unforgettable adventure! At Tres Amigos Outfitters, we've guided countless anglers through these pristine waters, and we're here to share our expertise. This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know to make your Santa Cruz fishing trip a resounding success. From essential gear to local fishing techniques, we've got you covered.

Essential gear for your Santa Cruz fishing trip

When it comes to fishing in Los Plateados, having the right gear can make all the difference. Here’s what you’ll need to tackle the challenging waters of Santa Cruz:

  • Spey Rod: A 8-9 weight Spey rod is ideal for the conditions at Los Plateados. We recommend a 6-piece rod for easier packing and to avoid extra airline fees. Many of our guides favor the Sage X 12′ 8-weight for its versatility.
  • Reel: A reliable, large-arbor reel with a smooth drag system is crucial. Ensure it can hold your fly line plus at least 200 yards of backing.
  • Line: We suggest a Skagit-style line for the often windy conditions. The Rio Skagit Max (Float) in 550 grain works well with most 8-weight rods.
  • Tips: Bring a variety of sink tips. A 12′ section of T-14 is a great all-rounder, but pack shorter and longer options too.
  • Tippet: Maxima Ultragreen in 15lb test is a favorite among steelhead anglers and works great at Los Plateados.
  • Running Line: We prefer monofilament for its ability to shoot through the guides. Rio Slick Shooter in 50lb test is an excellent choice.
  • Flies: While we’ll cover fly selection in detail later, make sure to bring a variety of leech patterns, intruders, and traditional steelhead flies in sizes 2-6.

Accessories: Don’t forget polarized sunglasses, pliers for hook removal and barb crushing, nippers, and a wading staff.

Mastering spey casting techniques for Los Plateados

Perfecting your Spey casting technique is crucial for success on the waters of Los Plateados. The river’s expansive width and varying wind conditions demand proficiency in specific casts. Focus on mastering the Snap-T for upstream winds and the Reverse Double Spey for downstream winds – these are the two most essential casts for fishing in Santa Cruz. While we primarily fish the northern bank (river left), being adept at both casts will serve you well in all situations. Before your trip, we highly recommend practicing these techniques on your local waters or booking a session with a casting instructor.

Packing smart for Patagonian weather

When preparing for your Los Plateados adventure, packing strategically for Patagonia’s unpredictable weather is crucial. The key is to bring versatile, layered clothing that can adapt to rapidly changing conditions. Start with a reliable pair of breathable waders and rubber-soled wading boots (felt soles are acceptable, but avoid boots with interchangeable soles or metal studs).

For upper body layers

Pack moisture-wicking base layers, 1-2 fleece pullovers, and a primaloft or down vest. A high-quality rain jacket is essential, serving more as a windbreaker than rain protection in most cases. Don’t forget warm socks and under-wader pants for extra insulation.

Accessories are vital for comfort

Bring 2 caps or wool hats, 1-2 pairs of polarized sunglasses, and buffs for sun and wind protection. Gloves are handy for chilly boat rides. Always remember sun protection: pack sunblock and lip balm.
