The King Salmon I encountered during this season’s Glacier King Salmon expedition were nothing short of extraordinary. While guiding for Tres Amigos Outfitters at Rio Caterina and Lago Pearson, I witnessed some of the most impressive catches of my career, despite the challenging Patagonian conditions we faced.
Record Season at Glacier King Salmon
I’ve seen plenty of big fish in my years of guiding, but this Glacier King Salmon expedition stood out. We consistently landed King Salmon over 40lbs, and I’ll never forget watching several anglers battle specimens pushing 60-65lbs. Sure, we might not have hooked as many fish as in previous seasons, but when you’re connecting with fish of this caliber, numbers become secondary.
Methods That Conquered Glacier King Salmon Waters
Let me tell you what made the difference this season – distance. The anglers who could really bomb those heavy spoons out into the lake were the ones consistently hooking up with trophy Kings. On the river, our tried-and-true blue and black Intruders kept producing, along with chartreuse patterns that these fish couldn’t resist.
Patagonian Challenges at Glacier King Salmon
January started like a dream at Tres Amigos Outfitters – perfect water, eager fish. Then mid-season hit us with that classic Patagonian curve ball: water levels dropped dramatically. But that’s fishing in Glacier King Salmon waters for you. We adapted daily, switching between Scandi lines for the skinny water and Skagits when things picked up. Every massive King Salmon we landed this season reminded me why I love guiding these waters. The fish are here, and they’re bigger than ever. When you hook into a chrome beast that peels your backing into the sunset, you understand why we call this trophy water.
